Swimming is part of our weekly routine
There’s plenty that brings the Face the Water community together. We love being in the water, we know how good a swim can feel...and we’re always looking forward to the next one.
But we don’t all swim the same way. Some of us count laps; others head for the ocean. Some swim with friends, while others treasure a little quiet time. We've been asking people to share their swimming habits and preferences via our Swim Fit Quiz, and the responses gave us a lovely glimpse into the many ways our community enjoys the water.
For most quiz respondents, swimming isn’t an occasional summer outing, its part of their routine. 86% swim at least once a week, including 35% who swim three or more times a week.
Why we swim: fitness, mental health and connection
The reasons we swim are just as varied as the swimmers. 82% selected general health and fitness as a reason they swim, and 55% selected mental health. For some, it’s also about connection: 32% enjoy swimming with others. For others, the appeal is a chance to switch off, with 28% saying they enjoy the solitude. And there's a competitive bunch of swimmers amongst us too: 22% love to train and compete.

Do we keep swimming when the weather cools?
When the temperature drops, nearly half of us just keep on swimming! And another third keep swimming but reach for warmer gear, such as a wetsuit or extra cap, to get us through.
And for the 20% who take a break until it warms up, we know that the water will be there when they’re ready to return. There’s no single swimming season for our community.

Where we swim: pools, ocean and freshwater
73% of respondents swim in a pool, making it the most popular place to swim amongst those surveyed. But our community enjoys all types of water: 41% selected open saltwater or an ocean pool, while 14% selected open freshwater.
A familiar lane, an ocean pool or a freshwater swim can each offer a different experience. Wherever you live and whatever water you have access to, there’s a way to make swimming your own.
What we look for in swimwear
Our swimming habits differ, and so do the details we look for in swimwear. The one-piece was selected by 98% of quiz respondents as their preferred style vs a two piece, but there’s no single one-piece that suits everyone.
75% of us prefer at least some bust support while we swim, and 40% say they need extra length in their swimsuit because of a long torso. Back style matters too: 68% selected an open back for flexibility, and 43% selected more coverage for support and comfort. Racerbacks and V-backs were the most popular back styles.
Classic styles, bright prints and everything in between
Fit is only part of the choice. 71% preferred a simple, classic swimsuit style, while 53% chose bright, fun prints. You might love both, depending on where you’re swimming and how you feel that day.
At Face the Water, we want to make it simpler for women to choose swimwear that feels good and suits the way they swim. That means helping you consider the details that matter to you, from support and length to back style and bum coverage.
So whether your happy place is a pool lane or an ocean pool, the right swimwear should feel good for your kind of swimming. Take our Swim Fit Quiz to discover your preferences and find your swim fit.
