How A Performance Swimsuit Fits

How to Tell If Your Swimsuit Fits Right

Finding the right swim fit makes all the difference. Whether you’re swimming laps, training with your squad, or heading for an early-morning ocean dip, a well-fitted swimsuit should feel supportive, streamlined and comfortable. Here’s how to tell when it’s just right.

Key Indicators of a Good Fit

Tight and supportive
A good swimsuit should feel firm all over, almost like a light compression. It’s designed to stay in place and give you confidence in the water, but it shouldn’t feel restrictive or uncomfortable.

No gaps or wrinkles
There shouldn’t be any baggy areas, wrinkles or sagging fabric. These can create drag in the water and make the suit feel loose once it’s wet.

Easy to put on
Your swimsuit should feel snug but not impossible to get into. It’s normal for it to feel tighter when dry, but if it takes excessive effort to pull up or adjust, it may be too small.

Comfortable and secure
Once it’s on, your suit should move with you. It shouldn’t dig into your shoulders, bust or hips, and you should feel free to swim, stretch and breathe comfortably.

Signs a Suit Is Too Big or Too Small

Too big:

  • Feels loose or easy to pull on

  • Fabric wrinkles or bunches when you move

  • You can pinch extra material around the waist or hips

Too small:

  • Feels restrictive or uncomfortable

  • Digs in at the shoulders, bust or leg openings

  • For women, if your bust spills out or the edges dig in, it’s likely too small
